Keep your hair protected all summer long with these summertime solutions
We all know the importance of protecting our skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays, but did you know that your hair needs protecting from them too?
When your hair is exposed to the sun for a long time, UVA and UVB rays can damage the hair cuticle (the outside cover of the hair strand), leaving it dry, brittle, discoloured, frizzy and with split ends.
It’s easy to forget and get complacent about our hair when the temperature rises and think that it can take care of itself. The truth is, it can’t. It needs our help to defend against sun damage. And for those of us lucky enough to head to even warmer climates this summer, there’s usually the added salt water from the sea and chlorine from the pool for hair to contend with too.
The effects from the sun and the heat can take hold quickly turning summertime fun into a battlefield for hair. So what exactly can we do to keep our locks protected from those harmful rays and other hair-damaging factors? B.O.B Salon’s Principle Hair Designer, Stephanie Stevens, is here with the answers for those summer hair woes:
“I always suggest getting a haircut before the real heat hits or before you go away for a summer holiday, that way any dry or split ends will be removed before you go out into the sun. This will prevent them from getting worse and ultimately leading to more irreparable damage.”
Stephanie continued to say how the products we use need to be ramped up in extreme conditions with thermal protectors and extra hydration to keep the hair nourished during these drying times. She said:
“The right products will not only bathe hair with nourishment and help protect against the harsh sun, but they should also turn heads with their ability to create styles that set us apart and make the most of our individual hair types.”
When asked what products would she recommend to give us those stand-out results, Stephanie didn’t hesitate. These are her summer must-haves for any styling routine:
• Shampoo Three® is essential if you’re spending your summertime poolside or ocean side as this strand-strengthening shampoo removes product build-up, chlorine and other damaging minerals from the hair before they can do any real damage.
• Awapuhi Moisture Mist® works for your hair and skin! Use it on your hair between washes to reactivate your styling products; apply it your face as a primer before make-up to keep it in place all day; and spritz it on your skin to stay refreshed over those hot and humid summer days.
• Sculpting Foam™ is definitely one for our curl-friends who want to find a way to avoid summertime frizz and dryness. Say goodbye to the curly hair woes of summer and say hello to this long-lasting conditioning foam. Bonus: It even smells like summer!
“And what summer day is complete without a cocktail? Try cocktailing a small amount of Super Skinny Serum with other Paul Mitchell styling products for added humidity resistance and shine.”
But what about colour treated hair? Stephanie has that covered too. She said:
“Each year, summer inspires more than half of our guests to go lighter and typically, they want to go as light and bright as possible. But UV exposure, on those already fragile and delicate blonde locks, fades toners and exposes yellowy-golden hues that most blondes try to avoid. However, blonde darers don’t need to hide in the shadows until the sun goes away, products such as Platinum Blonde Shampoo® has a violet-tinted formula to help control the brassy tones and protect natural blonde strands as they bask in all of their glory poolside.
“Another favourite of mine for blondes is, Forever Blonde Dramatic Repair, which, as it suggests, repairs and protects the hair. It’s loaded with proteins and nutrients that penetrate the cuticle to repair and moisturise hair after a sun session. It’s so simple to use too, just apply this lightweight spray to your hair after being out in the sun and let it get to work on re-hydrating and recovering your strands.”
And what about any non-blondes that still colour their hair?
“UV rays, salt water and chlorine can wreak havoc on colour-treated hair, but the Ultimate Colour Repair Three-Part System provides a serious defence against it all. The three-part system is a combination of a shampoo, conditioner and thermal protection spray that works wonders on coloured hair to prevent breakage and boost shine too.”
